“Live long and file share”

“Live long and prosper.” This phrase, widely recognized beyond sci-fi circles, is accompanied by a hand gesture made by raising the hand palm forward, parting the fingers between the ring and middle finger and extending the thumb. This gesture is known as the Vulcan salute.

Leonard Nimoy once told me in a interview in the late 90s, the salute is  based on a priestly blessing in the Jewish tradition. As a little boy, he was told not to turn around and look around to see what the Rabbi was doing, since he was not of age yet. But as most young boys do he did it anyway. What he saw was the Rabbi facing the worshipers and blessing with his hands in the air and fingers spread.

Years later he adopted the salute used by as Star Trek’s Mr. Spock

Even the phrase has Middle Eastern origins. The common greetings Shalom aleichem in Hebrew and Salaam alaykum in Arabic respectively mean “peace be upon you” and “upon you be peace”.

Now you can peacefuly share your files using the salute with the IMM Vulcan USB 2GB Flash Drive for $35.99. Certainly a unique looking grey device,  that trekkies or trekkers alike must have.  At least it makes a fun topic around the water cooler at work.

Coby Electronics portable DVD players recalled for battery fire hazard

Our electronic devices depend on safe batteries,  but over the last year we have seen far too many recalls in the electronics industry of faulty of defective batteries. From the time laptops were recalled over bad batteries to the most recent problem with iPhone batteries, you think the electronics industry would have wised up. Apparently not, Coby Electronics hass recalled over 19,000 portable DVD players due to,  you guessed it, a fire hazard from faulty battery packs.

The DVD player in question is the TF-DVD-8501 DVD/CD.MP3 players with an 8.5-inch screen. The batteries covered in the recall will have a serial number starting with the letters HY. The serial number can be found on a white sticker on the battery (see picture below).

Coby reports that it has received ten reports of the defective batteries overheating and causing a fire. Eight of these reports resulted in property damage. There have been no reported injuries. Coby is replacing the defective batteries free of charge.

Below you will find the links and phone numbers.
